Dispatch from the Knarr
It’s Autoimmune Awareness Month, and I’ve been thinking about what “awareness” really means.
So much of the conversation surrounds being seen and heard, which matters. It really does.
But I also want to bring awareness to something else.
If you’re living with autoimmune disease, you are developing skills most people never have to think about.
You are becoming incredibly good at:
Prioritizing what truly matters.
Reading your energy levels like a weather report.
Adjusting plans without completely abandoning yourself.
Resting before total collapse, at least more often than you used to, if you are like me.
And let’s be honest, sometimes that looks like cancelling dinner plans and staying home in sweatpants. Which, frankly, can be a very strategic life decision.
Autoimmune awareness isn’t just about symptoms.
It’s about recognizing the quiet leadership and strength it takes to live well in a fluctuating body.
It’s about modeling to your kids, your partner, your friends, that taking care of yourself is not weakness. It’s wisdom.
It’s about saying, “Today I need to pivot,” without layering shame on top of fatigue.
So, this month, yes, let’s raise awareness.
But let’s also raise recognition.
If you’re living with autoimmune disease, you are not just surviving.
You are learning how to lead your life differently.
You are modeling flexibility.
You are modeling boundaries.
You are modeling that rest is not weakness.
And that matters.
Before you scroll away, pause and name one thing you did recently that protected your energy or honored your limits.
It doesn’t have to be dramatic. Big or small, it counts.
