Unexpected Powerful Moment

I originally posted this blog on LinkedIn .

Three women, seated in the phlebotomy lobby of the Cancer and Blood Disorder Center, revealed the power of a 10-minute conversation.

I was one of the three and grateful to be part of this unexpected and powerful moment.

One woman began by quietly sharing her medical challenges as she motioned to her many medical supports. I responded with empathy. The third woman gently shifted the conversation, inviting the first to tell us more about her life. What followed was a beautiful reframing: we learned about her close-knit family’s care for her through food, snacks, and entertainment options. She lovingly told us about the family dog who had chosen her as his person.

As she spoke, her sadness and perhaps even embarrassment began to lift. By the end, her face lit with joy. When her brother entered the room, she beamed and said, “These two women want to move in with us because you take such good care of me.”

That conversation could have gone many ways. But one woman’s curious, compassionate question transformed a moment of vulnerability into one of pride, connection, and joy.

It reminded me how much power each of us holds just by being present, open, and willing to engage.

I carry that moment with me and look forward to nurturing more “small” transformations like it, wherever they appear.
